Lucibela’s voice is the embodiment of the sounds of the Cape Verdean traditions of morna and coladera. Heir to the musical heritage of the legendary Cesária Évora, she started out performing the music of others, but it was clear from her interpretations that hers was a voice that could make classics of her own.
In 2017, she recorded her debut album with producer Toy Vieira, musical director for Évora, furthering her aim of carrying on the legendary diva’s legacy. “There will never be another Cesária,” the woman who was often compared to the great diva said. “My aim is to carry on the work Cesaria began.”
This mission involves a growing schedule of international performances, ensuring the world hears what Cape Verdean music has to offer, through a celebrated blend of the traditions with contemporary music.
Whether at essential industry-facing events like Atlantic Music Expo (2017) or WOMEX (2018), or at festivals, theatres, and other venues around the world, audiences are wowed by Lucibela’s blend of traditional Cape Verdean music with contemporary sounds; her compositions are infused with originality and authenticity – many of which are the products of diverse collaborations – while her enchanting voice and charismatic stage presence has been winning over fans across the globe.
Her latest album, Amdjer, is a tribute to Cape Verdean women, but also to women in general: their sorrows, their anxieties and their challenges, but also their strength and their determination to overcome, the joy of living and the universal theme of love.
