Gaiteros de Ovejas 🇨🇴

Hailing from Colombia’s interior Caribbean coast, Los Gaiteros de Ovejas is a six-piece ensemble that centres its style on the ancestral sounds of the gaita (flute) and percussion.

With a history of more than 30 years and a roster of two generations of musicians, the group’s original compositions combine traditional rhythms of cumbia, porro, currulao to tell the stories of their people and region in an upbeat and danceable style.

But Gaiteros de Ovejas don’t live in the past: They are well known for collaborating with contemporary artists to bring their music into the present day, and share it far beyond their home, having famously worked with Canadian indie/art-rockers Arcade Fire and celebrated Colombian electro-tropical outfit Bomba Estereo, and others.

The result is a living, musical testament to the idea of thinking global and acting local, as they spread word along their international touring route about the instruments featured in their show – which they make, along with other handicrafts, according to the traditional methods. Their latest record, Eterno, was a collaboration with Beny Esguerra, a Toronto-based Colombian gaita player, singer, rapper, teacher, community leader, and more.
