A duo uniting Canary Island natives Anibal Llarena, a writer and musician, and Belén A. Doreste, a singer and composer, Anibal y Lajalada creates a trance-driven danceable reinvention of the sound of the Islands

Llarena is a promoter and student of the folkloric dance, music, and instruments of the Canary Islands who is a writer of short stories, poetry, children’s literature and greguerías, one-line Spanish haiku-meets-joke-meets-manifesto.

Doreste began her musical journey in her teens and is already into her second decade as a performer, with bands Bel Bee Bee and ARUBE under her belt. Lajalada, her most recent musical project, digs deeper into her electronic roots, while she also works across disciplines as a film editor, animator, video-mapper and more.

Weaving modern electronic sounds through roots music and folklore, their sound is equal parts traditional and forward-looking, combining loops and electronic approaches with live instrumentation. Critical attention has followed: Their 2021 debut album DMÑNNS (“demañananosé”) received two awards at the 2022 Premio Canario de la Música: best pop-rock album, and best song (“demañananosé”).
