Newen Afrobeat is the first Afrobeat band in Chile. Colorful, hip, passionate, and with a force of youthful energy that’s undeniable, this 12-piece orchestra celebrates the spirit of Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, but in its own Latin American way. ('Newen' comes from the language of the indigenous Chilean Mapuche community, meaning the individual life-force.) Echoing Fela Kuti's famous war-cry, 'music is the weapon', the band’s lyrics carry social messages, inviting listeners to transcend the strictures of modern society and liberate themselves through a unified energy. This music & dance groove machine has shared stages with some of the genre’s established heavyweights, including Tony Allen, Femi Kuti and Oghene Kologbo. Newen Afrobeat is rumoured to be working on an upcoming album that aims for a more improvisational approach to present-day currents in live jazz and afro-rhythms while still interweaving its original alchemy of African and Chilean traditions.
