Rommel Ribeiro

A Montrealer since 2006, Rommel Ribeiro is an award-winning Brazilian (originally from the city of São Luís do Maranhão) singer-songwriter, composer, lyricist, guitarist and producer who stands out for his versatility. Ribeiro grew up in a family of creative artists and from an early age came to discover iconic Brazilian musicians like Gilberto Gil. Mixing elements of Brazilian popular music with Afrobeat, reggae, funk and jazz, Rommel performs uplifting compositions in Portuguese, French, Spanish and English. “I consider myself a free artist and try not to fit into predetermined labels. I’m an artist of the world and my music reveals and is nourished by my wanderings”, he boasts.

In praise of Rommel’s immense talent and dedication, Brazilian impresario Zé Américo said, “He seems to be restless, always searching for novelties, which is something common in every great artist… I can feel that…in the way he plays the guitar when composing, and in the way he explores unknown, audacious rhythmic elements, as well as unconventional melodies.” In 2021, Rommel released his 6th studio album, titled Karawara, on the prestigious Brazilian label Biscoito Fino. It’s a fitting tribute to the Indigenous peoples of the world and their long struggles for recognition and basic human rights.
