Feet stomping and everybody moving. Grooves for days. Monster horns. Crushing percussion. Shredding psych-rock guitars. These are among the elements that make the Five Alarm Funk experience so cherished at TD Sunfest. The Vancouver-based band is eight strong and two decades deep into a career that has seen it release six acclaimed albums (including 2020’s Big Smoke) and burn up stages across the country. Needless to say, the band loves playing our festival, which they consider “the best place on Earth outside of Disneyland.”

Don’t be fooled by the name: there’s more to FAF than, well, funk. Just ask drummer Tayo Branston, who says that, although they are rooted in the style that gives the outfit its name, he and his bandmates thrive on being able to transcend that genre by seamlessly mixing in Gypsy rock, Latin music, ska, and even progmetal. For all the honing of its studio craft, Five Alarm Funk’s epic live shows are still what define the band. Its sweat-drenched concerts are infused with an intense spirit of fun that breaks down barriers between band and audience, and moves both into a manic dance party. Wild costumes, outrageous props, and badass choreography complement the seriously tight arrangements and genre-mashing grooves.
