Delivering high-energy Afro-funk fusion influenced by Fela Kuti’s politicised Afrobeat, Parliament’s clever groovy funk, James Brown’s passionate soul flavour, Bruno Mars’ bubbly pop sound and Jimi Hendrix’s rock intensity, Papagroove has brought their magic to stages far and wide.
The band’s explosive sound has won over audiences at Montreal Jazz Fest, Calgary Folk Music Festival, Calgary International Blues Festival, Hornby Festival, SunFest, Festival international des rythmes du monde, Festival d’été de Québec, Rimouski Jazz Fest, Woodstock en Beauce, Ottawa Jazz Fest (opening for Medeski, Martin & Wood), and many other spots. Formed in 2006 in Montreal, the band has released three albums, been nominated for ADISQ Award (the JUNOs of Quebec), and won a GAMIQ (Alternative Independent Music Gala of Quebec) in 2018.
The eight-piece band, known for their fiery stage presence, their mastery of improvisation and their explosive presence, sing, like their hero, Fela Kuti, about injustice and societal issues. Likewise, they also understand that music is, and will remain, the best and most subtle weapon of all.
