Olga Cerpa Y Mestisay
Olga Cerpa is the most important female voice of the last three decades in Canary Islands. Nominated for two Latin Grammys, she has shared stages with great artists like Omara Portuondo, Joan Manuel Serrat, Julio Pereira and Milladoiro. Along with her 25-year-old band Mestisay, she has produced musical theater touring shows such as “Vereda tropical,” which curated well-known Latin songs from the 1940s & ‘50s, and “Jallo” (a word that refers to the objects that the sea throws to the Canary shores). This concept is used by Olga and Mestisay to create splendid songs inspired by the musical influences that reach the beaches of their native land: the sounds of Latin America, Portugal, Cabo Verde and the African continent as well as rediscovered Canary Island songs.
Praise for Olga and her work keeps rolling in like the ocean at high tide. F. Da Silva of Diario de Lisboa writes, “Her voice is poignant, within it many years of knowledge, her own and that of other people before her. She looks like a light source, a life spring.” And Leida Fiallo of Gaceta Latina de New York says, “Olga is accompanied by five excellent musicians, in a mix of Atlantic sounds full of elegance and island flavor, with the Canary timple and the Portuguese guitar in an elegant marriage.” The rest of her band includes Spanish guitar, percussion, bass guitar, and saxophone / trumpet / flute / clarinet.
