Ghetto Kumbé´s concept is as powerful as it is simple: a journey to the rhythmic Afro-Caribbean roots of Colombia fuelled by the hypnotic power of contemporary Afrohouse beats. GK’s co-producer, The Busy Twist, adds all the legacy of UK’s bass scene to the Afrofuturistic sounds of the group. One minute you’re on a Colombian dance floor, and the next you’re singing along with the tribes of West Africa.
The band is home to three of the most skilful artists on today’s Colombian music scene: El Guajiro (La 33 and La Otra Banda singer, and former singer for Sidestepper), Chongo (percussionist in Sidestepper, Toto La Momposina and Ondatrópica, among many others) and Doctor Keyta (African music specialist and percussionist in the dancing company “Zarabanda” & L’arpeggiata).
Ghetto Kumbé adheres to a setup and aesthetic that are minimal yet highly mesmerizing: futuristic neon tribal patterns. Their self-titled debut album is visceral, committed, and rebellious, denouncing through frantic rhythms the inequalities and abuses imposed by corrupt governments, while simultaneously enticing listeners to join in the fight. Dance mingles with awareness to create a global community where family, friends, and strangers come together through their shared love of music to activate change among themselves.
In the eight years since its inception, Ghetto Kumbé has gone from being a local Colombian outfit playing mostly small club gigs and parties to the opening act on international tours by iconic bands like Radiohead.
