Event Navigation

Every year, Jazz International Rotterdam in the Netherlands presents The Pack Project, led by an emerging young artist.  In 2020, the leader of the Pack was the rebellious saxophonist, flutist, vocalist and composer Alba Gil Aceytuno, who is originally from Las Palmas, Canary Islands, but is now based in Rotterdam, which offers her a music scene and atmosphere that she loves. Her current projects, which keep her active in both cities, include the Gran Canaria Big Band, Pablo Queu, Tamarae as well as Zumurrud, Amaguk and Don’t Cut the Tree, of which she is co-founder. She has recorded several albums with Amaguk (Amaguk, 2019; Resilient Forest, 2020) and with Zumurrud (Zumurrud I, 2021).

In 2021, Alba debuted her new solo project Aguayro at the Canary Jazz Festival, and later in several Dutch cities thanks to her role in The Pack Project. The album was conceived with the idea of capturing Alba’s personality, influences and style, accompanied by musicians with whom she had a special long-standing connection.  Alba composed all the songs, with shades of jazz, hip-hop, punk rock (her ‘power supply’) and Canarian folk.  Moving between the instrumental and the vocal, the recording intersperses frantic moments with delicate and calm ones. A key idea of the project was incorporating whistled language to vindicate its use and teaching, and to propose another way of expressing thoughts and messages.
