Nano Stern (Chile)
Chilean singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer Nano Stern is a powerhouse artist, brilliantly layering Indigenous, African and European elements into a sound all his own. Since 2006, Nano has released over six studio albums, received numerous awards, and toured the world. He made his TD Sunfest debut in March of 2017 at Aeolian Hall.
Folk great Joan Baez opined: “Nano may be the best young Chilean songwriter of his generation. With his lyrics, melodies, message, delivery, humour and heart, he gets my vote”. Nano’s closest companions remain his guitar and staggering vocals, and with them come extraordinary musicianship and a wide-open heart.
What makes Nano Stern so relevant, however, is not only that he’s a virtuosic musician, but that he’s also a dedicated and passionate activist who utilizes the platform of his creative expression to promote social and environmental justice. Nueva Canción icons like Inti-Illimani and Victor Jara, who suffered exile and death during the Pinochet era in Chile, continue to inspire Nano’s breadth of sound and emotion. In fact, Tony Hillier of Rhythm Magazine considers him “one of the most powerful voices to have emerged in Chile since the legendary Victor Jara”.
Nano best articulated the essence of his creativity by remarking: “If I’m able to vibrate strongly, other people will resonate. If that frequency is intense, other things around it will vibrate together with it. Music in the end is that. We can put aside words and genre and tradition. In the end, it is all about a movement of air that makes our bodies move. It’s the most mysterious thing.”
