Taking its name from the word for heart or soul in the Afro-Cuban religion Santeria, OKAN fuses Afro-Cuban and other global roots rhythms with jazz, folk and classical forms. Embracing genres and roles that have historically been dominated by men, co-leaders, composers and multi-instrumentalists Elizabeth Rodriguez (violin) and Magdelys Savigne (percussion) bring freshness and sophistication to their compositions through powerful vocals, incredible musicianship and potent lyrical content. Now Toronto-based, both women were classically trained in Cuba and are former members of the Grammy-nominated band Jane Bunnett & Maqueque as well as the JUNO-nominated group The Battle of Santiago. In the spirit of TD Sunfest, OKAN welcomes every culture as its own.
