AFROTRONIX

This summer, TD Sunfest continues to showcase the cultural riches of Colombia’s Caribbean coast where the music known as gaita has deep roots. A flute-like instrument adopted by the Cuna, Kogui and Zenue Indians, the gaita long had a strictly ceremonial and religious character and its melodies imitated the sounds of birds and nature. With the passing of the centuries and thanks to the cultural interaction of the Indians with the Spanish and, above all, with the Africans, the gaita was transformed physically and interpreted differently. Today, innovative young bands like Boza from Barranquilla, Colombia are championing Nueva Gaita (New Gaiti) in which the spirit of this ancestral music lives on but through a contemporary reimaging that reflects its urban evolution and incorporates new global and regional sounds like jazz, funk, reggae and electronica.
