Saltarello

"The wind blows heavily on cave like ambiances, bells and ethereal vocals. The Middle-Age happily frays with gliding electro spaces. The sky gets torn apart by celestial vocals. The Celtic harp rises over powerful beats. The melodious hurdy-gurdy lends a dramatic accent…Through this album a door opens wide toward eternity." - Yves Bernard, Vitrine du disque, Le Devoir

Saltarello (referencing an 18th-century Italian dance) is the creation of Luc Lafrenière and Julie Pomerleau, two colourful characters from Québec's Abitibi-Témiscamingue region who possess very different musical backgrounds, but share a passion for the sonic ambience of the medieval era. Producer amd host Dan Behrman, who often features the group on his spacey late night Radio-Canada program, says: "Saltarello is starting to position itself as the beacon of the contemporary Quebec Ethno-Trance scene."

Over six albums (the latest, Cliff of the Dawn, was released in May), the band has explored music from the four corners of the earth, including the profound voices heard in sacred music, the aerial sounds made by world string instruments, North African and Berber rhythms, and the mysteries of the Nordic soul. But every sonic adventure is really a pretext for Saltarello to fly free of impediments. Through a variety of traditional and contemporary instruments such as the hammer-dulcimer, bouzouki, duduk, keyboards, djembe, bendir and darbuka, "the music of Saltarello transports to enchanting musical universes with no boundaries all those willing to climb aboard their virtual flying carpet" (Dan Behrman).  Yves Bernard adds: "If the ensemble may ring bells akin to Dead Can Dance or Jean-Michel Jarre at his best, it definitely has its own singular & strong personality."
