Born Lazarus John Finn on the island of Dominica, Lazo has been a crowd favorite at TD Sunfest for 21 years - longer than any other festival performer! ‘Mr. Sunfest,’ as he is affectionately known, continues to exude a ‘feel good’ vibe through his unique combination of roots reggae ‘riddims’, conscious lyrics and an uncanny ability to connect with audiences. Every year, there is a regular refrain: “When is Lazo performing this weekend?”
Lazo’s numerous honors from industry peers include being chosen Top Reggae Performer of the Year at the internationally recognized Canadian Reggae Music Awards and garnering a series of Juno nominations. In 2002, he won a Juno (Best Reggae recording) for his CD Heart and Soul. In 2010, Lazo toured throughout the United States and South America as a member of the world-renowned Wailers (Bob Marley’s original backup band), delighting Bob Marley’s fans – and reggae lovers in general – with his obvious commitment to the music. However, driven by the need to concentrate on his own material, he left the Wailers to record a seventh CD, Passin Thru (Y.T. Records, 2011), which was updated and re-released in 2014 as Passin Thru (The Remix). Both versions offer a very impressive set of mostly original roots reggae compositions dealing with serious times, pleasure and pain. And, fittingly, the CD contains a special song, Sunfest, dedicated to the vision of this festival’s organizers, and adopted at the theme song for the new Sunfest Global Village radio show (heard Thursdays, noon to 1:30 PM on CHRW 94.9 FM). Needless to say, the music is truly uplifting!
