TD Sunfest '18 will be from July 5-8 in London, ON's beautiful Victoria Park. See you there!

Established in 2011, Lalun is an ensemble that takes its name from the Hebrew word meaning "to sleep, in a soft, gentle sense."  The group is comprised of Liron Man (Israel/Spain) on hand pans and flamenco guitar, Lan Tung (Taiwan/Canada) on erhu (Chinese violin) and vocals, and Jonathan Bernard (Canada) on percussion.  With its unique instrumentation and hypnotic intercultural sound, this international ensemble presents original compositions and traditional music from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, colored and influenced by its players’ roots in Chinese, Flamenco, Galician and Jewish music. Although Lalun is new on the world music scene, its members bring over fifty years of professional musical experience to the stage.  Lalun’s performances include dates at Place des Arts (Montreal), Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), the National Concert Hall (Taipei), as well as extensive international tours.

Israel-born Liron Man bought his first hang (also known as hand pan) in 2006, and immediately felt a connection with this recently invented percussion instrument, which is based on the principles of steel pans. Crossing between Canada’s new music, improvised music and world music scenes, Taiwan-born Lan Tung is the Artistic Director of the Orchid Ensemble, as well as a composer and concert producer.  Lan enjoys taking culturally specific materials outside of their context, fusing together various styles.  Another veteran member of the Orchid Ensemble, Jonathan Bernard draws on his background in Western percussion, along with a fascination for Asian traditions, to create a brilliant sound palette that incorporates a myriad of instruments, techniques and styles. His interests range from orchestral music to contemporary chamber music to world music.
