La Chiva Gantiva

The story of La Chiva Gantiva began in Brussels circa 2004 when three young Colombian students began playing percussion together. Driven by a desire to assert their roots, they took to blending Afro-Colombian rhythms, such as champeta, chirimia and mapale, with other styles of music they loved: rock, afrobeat and funk. Four more musicians (two Belgians, a Frenchman and a Vietnamese) soon came on board, leading to performances around the globe.  La Chiva Gantiva's electrifying vibe quickly won over the media and public alike, with The Times (London, UK) describing their live show as a "frenetic carnival-punk racket that detonates like a Molotov cocktail of rock, rap, soul and ferociously funky Latin rhythms."

Last year, La Chiva Gantiva released their second album, Vivo (Crammed Discs) - a gloriously raucous work recorded in a studio that the band built above a bar in central Brussels. The CD contains songs in which La Chiva Gantiva further explore several different musical directions, such as traditional percussion patterns and new sonic territories, while remaining grounded in their trademark rock/afrobeat groove, punctuated by exuberant horn riffs. In his April 2014 review of Vivo, The Guardian's Robin Denselow wrote: "There are Colombian influences here, of course, particularly in the furious percussion work that drives on almost every song. But then there's jangling funk in the opening 'Para Arriba', wailing clarinet and brass on 'Me Voy De Mi Cabeza', Spanish rap and guitar riffs added to the mix for 'El Pollo'… and echoes of Manu Chao in the French song 'Pigeon'. This is frantic, good-time music that I suspect will sound even better live."  You can find out for yourself at TD Sunfest '15!
