Hailing from Chicago, DJ Sound Culture (David Chavez) is a main instigator of World Music and Tropical Bass (deep music) in the Midwest. The Chicago Tribune calls him one of "Chicago’s savviest cultural players" and Chicago Public Radio dubs him a "World Music Concert Empresario." Born and raised in the Windy City's Logan Square neighborhood, Sound Culture has always been led by his great affinity for cool and adventurous music. In the DJ booth, he's an ethno-musicologist or cultural chemist of sorts, exploring the world's eclectic sounds and finding the threads that tie us together globally. From Bhangra to Balkan Beat, African Soukous to Latin House, DJ knows how to navigate a Sunfester's auditory senses. His live mixes are both dynamic and seamlessly cohesive: whether you're a world music enthusiast or dance floor regular, he keeps things interesting.
As well as producing some of the hippest global concerts and street fests in Chicago for Sound Culture Center for Global Arts, David Chavez is founder and co-host of Future Rootz radio on WNUR FM, resident DJ at the Cumbia Sazo monthly parties, and remixer for Global Club Music Networks WOMEXimizer Re:mixes project. DJ Sound Cultures's numerous accolades include being twice featured at World Music Festival Chicago (the longest running festival of its kind in the US), featured world music DJ at the 2011 Folk and Roots Festival Chicago, and featured DJ at the 2010 Nomadic World Music Festival. In addition, he was voted 'favorite DJ' by CHIRemezcla, which represents Chicago's cutting edge Latin music scene for the national En Tu Cuidad MySpace Latino campaign.
