Calan are five highly talented young instrumentalists from different parts of Wales who have been revitalizing traditional Welsh music through their sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes, and spirited and energetic performances. Fiddles, guitar, accordion, bagpipes and step-dancing spring to life as Calan perform songs and tunes from their new album Dinas. All of the musicians in Calan come from homes where folk music was experienced and appreciated, and early on they took lessons at Clera (Society for Welsh Traditional Instruments).

In 2005, Angharad Sian (fiddle), Bethan Williams-Jones (accordion, vocals, clog dancing), and Llinos Eleri (harp) befriended each other in Sweden while taking part in the Wales-Sweden exchange programme run by trac (trac is Wales' Folk Development organization; its role is to promote and develop Welsh music and dance traditions, both within Wales and beyond).  Soon after, they decided to form a band, and Calan was born. Today's quintet alson includes Patrick Rimes (fiddle, whistle, pipes), and Sam Humphreys (guitar). Following the release of their 4-star debut album, Bling (2008), Calan has been playing to huge audiences and rave reviews at concerts and festivals around Britain and Europe, including the coveted Cambridge Festival, and Celtic Connections in Glasgow. Frank Hennessy of BBC Radio Wales says, "Calan have it all. Energy, attitude, freshness, a sense of fun and above all, real talent." And Taplas magazine raved, "these three lasses and two lads demonstrate virtuoso playing throughout their lightning fast tunes, eastern influenced jazzy improvised numbers, and glorious harmony laden female Welsh folk songs." Calan’s eye-catching clothes and presentation have raised the eyebrows of some traditionalists; however, the musicians see themselves as new generation ambassadors, striving to take their fresh sounds to new audiences, while raising the international profile of Welsh traditional music.
