Sophie Milman is a Russian-born, Israeli-raised and Toronto-based jazz vocalist whose classy cosmopolitan allure and wisdom beyond her years has truly electrified jazz fans, “evoking smoky lounges, softly clinking glasses and the cool of the night.” (Don Hickman, L.A. Times).
Not yet 30 years-old, Sophie fell in love with music as a child, when she was attracted to her father’s cherished collection of vinyl jazz bootlegs and served as her parents’ jukebox in the backseat of their beat-up old car without a radio. In 2004, her self-titled debut album established her as a major artist in Canada and, since then, Sophie has topped the Billboard jazz and iTunes Canada, the U.S., France and Japan charts, won a JUNO Award (for her 2007 sophomore release, “Make Someone Happy”), and captivated audiences around the globe at such prestigious venues as the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and the legendary Blue Note clubs in New York and Japan. And she’s also found time to finish a degree in commerce at the University of Toronto, where she recently was awarded a gold medal!
Sophie reflects: “Moving around the world twice, starting from scratch each time and having to reinvent and reimagine myself in a completely new context and culture—that’s the defining feature of my life. It’s certainly shaped me as a person, and it continues to color my approach to music, informing the kind of songs that I choose to sing and the way I sing them.”
One of Canada’s hottest jazz chanteuses is also unquestionably one of Sunfest’s biggest success stories. An immediate sensation when she debuted at Sunfest '05 during her very first cross-Canada tour, Sophie Milman has always reserved a special place in her heart for Sunfest and its patrons, whose support helped to launch her career. “I love the festival. It’s my favourite in Canada to be honest and I’ve played them all by now,” she says.
On June 23rd, Sunfest concertgoers can look forward to hearing some of their favorite Milman tunes, including selections from her most recent album, “In the Moonlight”. It finds the charismatic artist creating her most sophisticated and accomplished work to date, drawing upon her sublime interpretive skills and unique personal history to deliver a deeply compelling set of jazz and pop standards that showcases the subtle emotional shadings of her singing.
